Yasmina Ouahid, Moroccan visual artist. She was born in 1993 in Tetouan and graduated from the National Institute of Fine Arts in the same city in 2015. She then moved to Paris where she obtained a Masters degree in Contemporary Creation and Plasticity from the Pantheon Sorbonne University in 2018. Being passionate about contemporary artistic creation in connection with fashion, the artist has realized several research projects on the subject.
The artist was very impregnated by the city of Tetouan where she grew up. Its socio-cultural environment is full of rituals and practices related to body aesthetics, clothing appearance, floral culture, manual work and textile crafts held by women. All these elements strongly and consciously influenced her artistic practice.
Through her works, she explores these elements, investing a set of techniques and materials, she examines their materiality, their plasticity and tries to decode them, decontextualize them and analyze them in a global and universal context. Her practice usually relies on research, documentation, experimentation, manipulation. It is about a work of assembling, recycling, and construction of forms in space, on a support and sometimes of diversion or modification of objects.
The artist is currently working on contemporary fashions and the clothing industry of the 21st century. She explores issues of identity and social construction, cultural hybridizations and the status of women through fashion. She questions the power of images and their role in the domination of the "other", the clash of civilizations, and the decadence of cultural identities. Through her works (collages, sculptures, photographs and installations), she proposes constructive analyses on these artifacts from a political, historical, anthropological and philosophical dimension.
Yasmina Ouahid, artiste marocaine. Née en 1993 à Tétouan et diplômée de l’Institut National des Beaux Arts de la même ville en 2015, elle part ensuite s’installer à Paris où elle obtient en 2018 un Master en création et plasticités contemporaines de l'université Panthéon Sorbonne.
L'artiste a été très imprégnée par la ville de Tétouan où elle a grandi. Son environnement socio-culturel regorge de rituels et de pratiques liés à l'esthétique corporelle, l'apparence vestimentaire, la culture florale, le travail manuel et les métiers textiles tenus par les femmes. Tous ces éléments ont influencé fortement et consciemment sa pratique artistique.
A travers ses travaux elle explore ces éléments, investit un ensemble de techniques et de matériaux examine leur matérialité,leur plasticité et tente de les décoder, de les décontextualiser et de les analyser dans un contexte global et universel. Sa pratique compte généralement sur la recherche, la documentation, l'expérimentation et la manipulation des objets. Il s’agit d’un travail d’assemblage, de recyclage, de construction de formes dans un espace, sur un support et parfois de détournement ou de modification d’objets.
L'artiste explore les questions de la construction identitaire et sociale, des hybridations culturelles et le statut de la femme à travers les modes. Elle interroge le pouvoir des images et leur rôle dans la domination de « l’autre », le choc des civilisations, la décadence des identités culturelles. A travers ses œuvres (collages, sculptures, photographies et installations), elle propose des analyses constructives sur ces artefacts à partir d'une dimension politique, historique, anthropologique et philosophique.
